Russia's container throughput plunged by 5.4% due to war

  • The container throughput in Russian ports during the first quarter of 2022 dropped by 5.4% year-on-year to 1.71 million TEU.
  • Exports saw a decrease by 3.4% to 720,700 TEU, while imports dropped by 9.8% to 691,000 TEU, road transit dropped by over a half from 59,600 TEU to 22,600 TEU, but the handling of empty containers grew by 23.2% to 447,500 TEU. 
  • The decline is due to the discontinuation of major shipping lines including Maersk in Russia and Belarus due to the invasion of Ukraine.
