China defies trade headwinds with 5.4% economic growth in first quarter

China’s economy grew by 5.4% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025, boosted by a surge in exports ahead of steep U.S. tariffs.
The growth came just before the U.S. implemented tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese goods, intensifying trade tensions.
In response, China imposed 125% tariffs on American products but emphasized its commitment to keeping markets open.
Analysts expect China’s economic growth to slow in the coming months due to the impact of the escalating trade war.
