Canada drops 2 appeals in long-running U.S. softwood lumber duty battle

Canada has dropped two long-standing legal appeals against U.S. anti-dumping duties on softwood lumber.

The appeals were connected to older reviews from past decades and were withdrawn earlier this month.

In August, the U.S. Commerce Department announced plans to nearly triple duties on Canadian lumber to just over 20%.

Ottawa is shifting focus toward addressing sector-specific tariffs from the Trump era, rather than negotiating a broader trade or security agreement.

Most Canadian exports remain duty-free under CUSMA; however, tariffs still apply to steel, aluminum, autos, and lumber.

The Prime Minister recently pledged industry support, including CA$700 million in loan guarantees and $500 million for long-term market diversification.
