US housing starts fell by 4.1% in January

In January, the privately‐owned housing starts fell by 4.1% to 1,638,000 a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) compared to the modified December estimate of 1,708,000 but is 0.8% above the January 2021 rate of 1,625,000.
In January, Single-family housing starts fell by 5.6% to a rate of 1,116,000 compared to the revised December figure.
Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits grew by 0.7% to 1,899,000 compared to the revised December rate, a 0.8% increase from the January 2021 rate of 1,883,000, and single-family authorizations grew by 6.8% to a rate of 1,205,000.
Privately‐owned housing completions reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,246,000, which is 5.2% less than the revised December estimate of 1,315,000 and 6.2% below January 2021.
Single‐family housing completions in January fell by 7.3% to a rate of 927,000 compared to December's estimated rate of 1,000,000.
