Canfor to reduce production capacity 1,200,000 m³ due to market and raw material pressures

Canfor Corporation is restructuring its BC operations to better align manufacturing capacity in the area with available long-term timber fiber supply and as a result, it was permanently closing its Chetwynd sawmill and pellet plant.

Canfor also extended the shutdown of its Houston sawmill facility to promote a major redevelopment of the site; it intends to build a new, modern, globally competitive manufacturing facility in Houston that will employ state-of-the-art technology to produce high-value products from the sustainable timber in the region.

The company will also study available economic fiber and perform project financial analysis, supporting a final investment decision that is expected by the end of 2023 Q2.

The closures of both Chetwynd and Houston will remove 750 million board feet of annual production capacity and will follow an orderly slowdown of operations which will conclude early in 2023 Q2.
