EU announces countermeasures against U.S. tariffs, targets wood sector
Posted on March 25, 2025 |
The European Commission is enforcing tariffs on U.S. imports in response to U.S. duties on EU steel and aluminum.
The EU aims to match U.S. tariffs by imposing levies on up to €26 billion worth of U.S. goods.
On April 1, the EU will discontinue previous countermeasures from 2018 and 2020, impacting €8 billion in U.S. exports.
By mid-April, the EU will roll out new tariffs on U.S. products, countering recent U.S. trade restrictions on over €18 billion of EU exports.
The EU will introduce the tariffs in two phases, starting April 1 and enforcing them fully by April 13.
The new EU tariff list may include softwood lumber, panel boards, and pulp.
The Commission is engaging with Member States and industry stakeholders before finalizing the second phase of measures.
