Russia boosts sawn timber exports to Japan despite expanding sanctions

Posted on June 20, 2025   |

In 2024, nearly 14% of Japan’s sawn timber imports came from Russia.

Russian timber exports to Japan rose by 13% compared to the previous year.

As a result, Finland’s wood product exports to Japan dropped from nearly €600 million in 2022 to about €300 million annually in 2023–24.

The Finnish Sawmills Association and the European Organization of the Sawmill Industry (EOS) are urging Japan to sanction Russian wood products.

Sawn timber, planed timber, and glulam account for 30% of Finland’s total exports to Japan.

The sawmill industry is Finland’s largest export sector to Japan, making this shift in trade highly significant.
