Vietnam eyes stronger timber trade ties with U.S., focuses on sustainable practices

Vietnam’s timber sector wants to import more legal U.S. timber to ensure sustainability and meet global trade rules.

The U.S. remains Vietnam’s top wood export destination, receiving 55% of its $9 billion in wood exports in 2024.

U.S. timber imports to Vietnam totaled $316 million, mainly in sawn wood, logs, and veneer.

Since banning natural forest logging in 2014, Vietnam now relies on plantation forests and rubber plantations for wood.

About 700,000 hectares of these forests are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC certified (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), with a goal to certify 70% of all plantations by 2030.

Vietnam’s VNTLAS system, created through its FLEGT deal with the EU, is aligning with the EU’s new deforestation rules (EUDR).

The government also plans stricter local regulations with digital tools to improve timber traceability and legality.
