  • Members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) and yardmasters with the Transportation Division of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers (SMART-TD) voted in favor of ratifying the agreement.
  • However, SMART-TD train and engine service members voted to reject the tentative agreement reached, sending them back to the bargaining table with the freight railroads.
  • The required cooling-off period will end on December 8, which allows any of the 4 unions to begin strike action which would put all of the unions out of work.
  • A nationwide rail shutdown could cost over $2 billion a day, worsening the congestion at US ports.
  • SMART-TD now joins 3 other unions that have previously rejected the tentative agreement which are The Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division (BMWED), The Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen (BRS), The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers (IBB) all of which will return to the bargaining table with the railroads in search of a new agreement.
  • The unions that had ratified the agreement include BLET members, the Transportation Communications Union (TCU), the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen (BRC), a division of the TCU, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
  • The American Train Dispatchers Association (ATDA), the National Conference of Firemen and Oilers/SEIU (NCFO), the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers (SMART M), and the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers (IAM).
