German port workers begin 2-day strikes amid labor negotiations

German port workers have begun a 2-day strike to pressure employers before the fourth round of negotiations with the Central Association of German Seaport Operators (ZDS).

The United Services Trade Union (ver.di) has organized strikes in Bremen and Wilhelmshaven, with Bremen workers striking on the first shift on 10 July and Wilhelmshaven workers striking from 10 July until 11 July.

Workers in Hamburg and Bremerhaven are striking on 9 and 10 July, while employees in Emden will strike during the first and second shifts on 10 July.

The strike aims to increase pressure on employers before the fourth round of negotiations scheduled for 11-12 July in Bremen.

The union is demanding a €3 ($3.24) hourly wage increase from 1 June 2024 and higher shift allowances.

This includes compensation for the missed increase in shift allowances from the 2022 agreement.

The union seeks a 12-month term for the new agreement.
