Trans-Pacific container rates hold steady as freight volumes decline

Container rates on the trans-Pacific stayed mostly unchanged last week as freight volumes dropped on major trade routes.

Asia–U.S. West Coast rates held steady at $1,700 per FEU, while Asia–U.S. East Coast rates were stable at $2,700 per FEU.

Early this week, daily rates rose by $400–$500 per FEU on both lanes, likely due to carriers pushing September GRIs (general rate increases).

Mediterranean Shipping Co. announced six blank sailings on Asia–Europe services, including three for Sept. 22–28, hinting at an early end to the peak season.

Most carriers have abandoned the Red Sea–Suez Canal route for 2025 after heightened conflict in Yemen, making the region too risky.

Asia–North Europe rates slipped 7% to $2,841 per FEU from the July–August peak of $3,400.

Asia–Mediterranean rates also declined 2% last week, now at about $3,000 per FEU.
