U.S. freight railroad and 9 of 12 Railroad Union failed to agree over a new labor deal

Posted on September 5, 2022   |

  • The U.S. railroad and the Transportation Communications Union/IAM, Brotherhood of Railway Carmen, and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers were to reach tentative agreements, to prevent further strikes.
  • The tentative agreements followed settlement guidance issued by the Presidential Emergency Board on August 16th with a 24% compounded wage increase during the five years from 2020 through 2024 and an immediate wage increase of 14.1% and five annual $1,000 lump sum payments.
  • However, the meetings between labor and the freight railroads were unable to reach any agreement, that the operating crafts could accept.
  • The main issues of wages and benefits remain a big hindrance and the recent merger of unions survey indicated rising support by union members for a work stoppage.
  • There are 9 unions in the rails industry without a tentative agreement in place, including the two biggest rail unions that represent engineers and conductors.
