- Calgary-based Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) will lock out employees on March 20 if the union representing train conductors and engineers fails to negotiate a new contract to compulsory arbitration.
- The work stoppage will create a freight capacity crisis, TCRC represents 3,000 CP locomotive engineers and conductors.
- The disruption is set to create more uncertainty in fertilizer markets just as farmers need essential nutrients to plant spring crops.
- Since September, the railway has been in contract discussions with the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, the union representing over 3,000 Canadian Pacific employees, which is seeking a number of wages, pension, and benefit improvements.
