China and Uzbekistan become vital importers for Russia as timber imports grew by 56.8% and 7.1% respectively

  • In the first 5 months of 2022, 98.85% of Russian timber exports were from the Asia-Pacific region in which China deliveries accounted for 56.8% internationally, Uzbekistan 7.1%, and Kazakhstan 2.7%.
  • China is an essential consumer of Russian sawn products for the past 15 years but the reorientation from roundwood to sawn timber and finished products in the form of plywood, and chipboard increased exports from Russia in January-May 2022 by 18.8% to 5.24 million m³.
  • In January-May 2022, the supply of timber products from Russia to Uzbekistan grew by 16.5% to 793.2 thousand m³.
  • In March 2022, the increase in imports of Russian timber products by EU countries grew by 12%, in April the figure rose by 2.3 times, and in May, dropped by 20.7%.
  • Estonian imports also grew by 6.9% to 438.5 thousand m³ of sawn timber compared to the supply of 2021, and deliveries of lumber to Finland grew by 1.5% to 330.4 thousand m³.
