Japan's trading firms to invest in forest projects to boost lumber demand

  • Mitsui & Co. plans to obtain shares in an Australian firm that manages forests and sells lumber, which will increase its stake in the forests by 49%.
  • Sumitomo Corporation plans to double its forested area in New Zealand to  100,000 hectares by March 2024.
  • Marubeni is also planting more trees in Indonesia to boost lumber supply.
