U.S. to double tariffs on Canadian lumber by September, jumping to 34.5%

Tariffs on Canadian lumber entering the U.S. are expected to rise from 14.5% to 34.5% by September.

The U.S. Department of Commerce issued a preliminary determination to increase duties after its annual review.

These tariffs stem from a long-running trade dispute and will be finalized after a review in August or September.

The hike is separate from Trump’s global tariff strategy, which maintains exemptions for Canadian lumber.

Trump’s March 1 order calls for a 25% boost in U.S. timber production from federal lands to cut import reliance.

Industry experts warn domestic supply won’t ramp up quickly due to production and logistical bottlenecks.

NAHB cautions that lumber tariffs could exceed 34.5% later in the year, urging stakeholders to prepare now.
