Vietnam to boost U.S. timber imports amid China’s suspension of U.S. wood shipments

Vietnam plans to import more U.S. timber for processing and re-export, especially after China halted U.S. timber imports.
In Q1 2025, Vietnam’s wood exports grew by 11.6%, reaching $3.95 billion, with the U.S. as the top importer.
Vietnam’s U.S. timber imports increased by 32.9% in 2024, totaling $316.36 million, making up 11.2% of total timber imports.
U.S. log imports to Vietnam grew by 41.4% in volume and 51.6% in value, reaching $89.9 million.
Sawn timber imports from the U.S. rose by 20.8% in volume and 29.6% in value, totaling $215.32 million.
Vietnam’s veneer imports from the U.S. saw a 103% increase in volume and 108% in value, reaching $6.72 million.
Vietnam is now the second-largest U.S. wood furniture supplier, providing 38–40% of U.S. wood furniture imports, worth $23–24 billion.
Vietnam relies heavily on timber imports, with raw timber making up 85.2% of its total wood product imports in 2024.
