USDA commits $200M to boost domestic timber production

Posted on June 2, 2025   |

The USDA is investing $200 million to launch the Forest Service’s National Active Forest Management Strategy.

The plan aims to boost timber production, improve forest health, reduce wildfire risks, and support forest-based rural communities.

It follows President Trump’s executive order to expand timber production across national forests quickly.

The strategy reduces regulatory delays, uses emergency powers, and speeds up project approvals for faster timber access.

Long-term contracts will be used to ensure a consistent wood supply and create economic stability in rural areas.

USDA Secretary Rollins directed the Forest Service to act immediately to increase domestic timber harvests.

The Forest Service now plans to raise timber harvests by 25%, targeting 4 billion board feet annually by 2028.
