Western Forest Products shuts Chemainus Sawmill, triggering job losses
Posted on June 16, 2025 |
Western Forest Products (WFP) is cutting production and reducing staff at its Chemainus Sawmill in British Columbia starting this month.
The decision is due to a shortage of viable logs, making it difficult to maintain operations.
WFP informed the municipality that job curtailments will begin on June 18.
Permit delays and limited fiber access have long affected BC’s forestry sector, contributing to multiple shutdowns.
Local leaders say they’ve received assurances from provincial officials that the log supply issue is being addressed.
