Manufacturing sales in Canada grew by 0.3% to reach $71.4 billion in December, continuing a positive trend for three consecutive months.
Wood product sales surged by 11% year-over-year to $3.5 billion, with a 1.5% month-over-month increase from November.
Sales of non-metallic mineral products related to construction rose by 2% in December but saw a 3% decline from the previous year.
Furniture and related product sales dropped by 9% year-over-year and 5% compared to November, impacted by economic uncertainty and reduced consumer spending.
In the broader manufacturing sector, Q4 2024 sales climbed by 1.6% to $213.3 billion, fueled by gains in wood products and transportation equipment, though overall annual sales fell 2% due to weaker performance in petroleum and transportation equipment.
The wood product sector experienced a nearly 5 percentage-point drop in capacity utilization in December, while furniture manufacturing fell nearly 8 percentage points, reflecting lower output in both sectors.
