President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced the end of Algex during a meeting with business leaders on April 13 in Algiers.

Algex (National Agency for the Promotion of Foreign Trade) was responsible for supporting non-oil exports and regulating imports.

The agency operated under the Ministry of Internal Trade and Market Regulation.

Algex issued import licenses based on market needs and product availability.

Importers of finished products were heavily affected by Algex’s system due to Algeria’s focus on cutting imports.

The aim of reducing imports was to boost local production and save foreign currency.

The closure of Algex marks a shift in Algeria’s import policy and trade strategy.
