China responds to U.S. tariffs with 84% duty hike starting April 10

China has raised its tariff on all U.S. imports to 84%, up from the previously announced 34%, with implementation set for April 10.

The hike follows the U.S. imposing a 104% tariff on Chinese exports and the collapse of trade negotiations.

China’s finance ministry vowed to “fight to the end,” calling U.S. tariffs unjustified and defending trade parity.

In addition to tariffs, China is enforcing export controls on rare earth minerals and launching further retaliatory measures.

Beijing accuses the U.S. of failing to uphold commitments made during the phase 1 trade agreement from Trump’s first term.

Despite rising tensions, China recorded a $26.57 billion trade deficit with the U.S. in services in 2023, including finance and insurance.
