South Africa’s national transport unions to strike over wages from October 6

South Africa’s national transport unions to strike over wages from October 6

Posted on October 10, 2022   |

  • The United National Transport Union (UNTU) served a 48 Hour's Notice on nationalized infrastructure operator, Transnet, indicating a Protected Strike from 6 October as after months of salary negotiation Transnet has yet to make an adequate offer for its employees.
  • After UNTU threatened to give notice of the industrial action, Transnet provided a proposal on 3 Oct 2022, which included a 1.5% increase and backpay from 1 April to 30 September is due to be paid in full by the end of March 2023.
  • UNTU rejected the offer as it is an insult to their members who helped this company back on track.
  • On October 4, Transnet applied to the National Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to call conciliation discussions over the recent wave of negotiations.
  • Transnet urged unions, and Transnet workers, to accept its offer as it is the best possible deal that can be made right now.
