USDA commits $23 million to expand timber production and fight wildfires

Posted on May 7, 2025   |

The USDA is providing $23 million in grants to help transport hazardous forest materials—like dead trees and branches—to processing centers.

This effort is part of the USDA Forest Service’s Hazardous Fuels Transportation Program to lower wildfire threats near communities, infrastructure, and recreation zones.

The funding supports President Trump’s executive order to increase domestic timber production and Secretary Rollins’ push for more active forest management.

The program focuses on low-value wood, which is harder to process but can be used for soil additives, renewable energy, and sustainable materials like cross-laminated timber.

Grants are open to businesses, nonprofits, and governments (state, local, and tribal) to turn waste wood into useful products.

Applications are due by June 20, with priority given to wildfire-prone areas under Emergency Situation Determinations.

The program aims to protect forests, reduce fire risks, and support rural economies by putting unused wood to productive use.
